Built Around a Limestone Spring
Georgetown grew up around Royal Spring, one of the largest limestone springs in central Kentucky, discovered by surveyor John Floyd in 1774 and the reason settlers gathered here in the first place. The town was founded in 1784 as "Lebanon" and renamed Georgetown in 1790. A spring that large doesn't appear without an active karst system feeding it, and that same limestone plumbing runs under a good share of the town today.
