Kentucky's First Railroad Town
Midway holds a specific distinction among Bluegrass towns: it was the first Kentucky town built by a railroad. The Lexington & Ohio Railroad began construction toward Frankfort in 1831, reached the line's midpoint in 1833 -- which gave the town its name -- and the town itself was laid out in 1835 on land bought from a local farm, then incorporated in 1846.
